Take Your Spa's Retail Sales to the Next Level

Want to increase your retail sales? Most spas today could double their bottom line with a serious retail sales management plan. In this day and age, spas need to adapt their ways of dealing with retail due to numerous retail giants crossing over into sacred spa waters. To survive in this economy your spa needs to power up how it sells, stocks, and promotes its retail offerings. Here are 10 ways:

  • Focus on results - Many spas todays are so focused on relaxing spa-goers that thre is little attention paid to what they are looking to achieve during their spa experience.

  • Cultivate Selling Skills - Your spa customers have tons of products, which is why you need to know what is better or different about your products. (i.e The Scandle is not just another candle, but a candle that you can use for massage, manicures/pedicures, or as a daily moisturizer)

  • Attractive Displays - Make your displays tell a story.

  • Pay Attention to Product Selection - Start with at least 3 full brands

  • Offer a Reason to Buy Today - BOGO's work well!

  • Get ready to sell! - Allocate the necessary time for boosting spa sales.

  • Out of Sight is Out of Mind - Don't put shelves too of your shopper's peripheral vision.

  • Create A Bundle of Joy - Design spa packages by adding products to the offering. For instance, many spas will offer a Body Candle Massage Treatment and give the un-used portion of The Scandle to their customer to take home.

  • Sell from start to finish - Selling starts the moment the guest walks through the front door.

  • Capitalize on impulse Purchases - Place a small collection of inexpensive or fun items at the cash and wrap station like The Scandle Travel tins.

Is Private Labeling Right for Your Spa?

Competition in the spa, salon, and beauty products industry is at al all-time high. Day spa signs are sprouting up around us like spring grasses, grocery stores and gift shops have their own little “spa aromatherapy” departments, and .com companies have the huge beauty and wellness market firmly in their sights. It’s becoming increasingly difficult for even large retailers to retain their share of the beauty products market when so many means of access to these goods is now available to their customers. Customer have beauty.com, eve.com, and the now famous Bliss catalog at their disposal and these companies make it very, very easy for your customers to browse and buy at home or work. If you haven’t awakened to this business challenge yet it won’t be far off.

This is precisely where selling your own spa brand makes especially good sense. As far as the consumer is concerned the only place to get your brand is from you, whether it be at the retail counter, by mail order, or through your own online store. Department and grocery chains are dedicating increasingly larger amount of shelf space to house brands in an effort to reduce costs and limit competition. Many even feature “select” or upscale choices within their own lines as a means of eliminating holdover ideas in some customers that house brands are merely generic or of a lower quality than better-known products. The decline of cereal giants like Kellogg is an example of the success of this strategy for retailers.

So are private label products right for your spa business? Only you can answer this question accurately. But if retail profits, customer protection, and building some real brand-equity into your company investment has any meaning for you there are fewer options available that can help you better than this can.

Scandle offers their award-winning body massage candles with private labeling. Contact us for information.

Massage Candles Made in The USA vs. China

I recently received an email from a company in China that is manufacturing Massage Candles like The Scandle Body Candle. As I mentioned in an earlier blog about buying USA, in this case, it is important that consumers know exactly what they may or may not be getting when purchasing a spa, beauty, or massage product from China. Sure, it may be cheaper, but here's what you should consider, paticularly if you are as committed to sustainability as Scandle:

1.) In light of the recent recall of toys and other consumables coming from China containing led, etc. It's important to that products coming from China do not have any regulations. Although they may claim the product is all natural, there is no way to be sure!

2.) There are no regulations on bath and body products coming from China. Factories can operate in unsanitary conditions, which can be a huge liability issue when it comes to body massage candles. This company is claiming that their massage candle base (which is a straight soy wax, not like The Scandle that contains soy butter, shea butter, jojoba, & Vitamin E) is made in the United States, but again how can you be sure?

3.) China is one of the top contributors to environmental waste.
So if you see a Body Candle that looks like this, be LEARY!

I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic and the importance of buying USA made beauty & spa products.

Come "Tweet" With Us

Do you remember the days when making friends was simple? On the first day of Kindergarten I saw a little girl sitting alone on the steps. I walked over and sat down beside her and said, "Do you want to be my friend?" She said, "Yes," and so she became my best friend.

Now that we are all grown up, it might seem odd to approach someone and ask them to be your friend or mentor. But in reality the Internet has created a social network that makes it even easier to make friends. As spa or business owners and people in general, it has created a place where we can gather and talk about our concerns, our struggles, our successes and share information. With Twitter, for example, you get to know like-minded people simply by "following" them. (It all seemed odd to me in the beginning too.)

Twitter provides an opportunity to follow a wide variety of potential mentors whom you might never have the opportunity to meet otherwise. So join Scandle Body Candle and many others who are sharing life and business experiences.

Let's pretend we are on the playground and I have come and asked you if you will be my Twitter friend. If your answer is "yes" then come follow me and my other fellow Tweeters. With Twitter, there is no excuse to feel alone in business or life. You simply can't say that you don't know what other people are doing to succeed once you join the conversation.

Twitter gives you the opportunity to ask your business and product questions in one forum and get answers.

What Constitutes A Green Spa?

By now most people are somewhat familiar with green business operations and the reasons for operating a business with the environment in mind. As with many industries in the United States and abroad, the spa industry is beginning to realize the impact it has on the environment due to the high use of energy, water and waste. In addition, the fact that spas are places that consumers seek out for stress reduction, detoxification, and skin care, places them in an excellent position to educate clients about the environment’s impact on one’s health and wellness. It is fitting then that spa operators are concerned with educating consumers about taking care of the environment just as they would their physical bodies.

Based on information from The Green Spa Network, a green spa constitutes the following characteristics:

  • Strives to conserve energy and water resources.

  • Is committed to using materials that can be recycled, follows recycling practices, and is always looking for ways to minimize waste.

  • Utilizes natural and organic skin care products (like the Scandle Body Candle for instance)

  • Believes that it has a responsibility to guests and to the planet to reduce exposure to toxic substances and to minimize hazardous waste generation.

  • Is open to learning and adopting new environmentally friendly strategies and techniques.

  • Shares its concern for the Earth's well-being with guests.

Remember that your overall health and wellness extend beyond your physical body to the environment at large.

Aromatherapists Offer Aid to Relief Workers: You Can Help!

As you know, it's been a brutal hurricane season for people in pockets throughout the southern United States (luckily the hurricanes have had minimal impact here in northern Texas where Scandle is located). If you're an aromatherapist and/or aromatherapy products manufacturer, Scandle Body Candle LLC was told about a great way you can help. The United Aromatherapy Effort (UAE), a non-profit organization that was founded by aromatherapist Sylla Sheppard-Hanger in response to the 9/11 tragedy, put out a call to action this week. The UAE’s mission is to provide stress relief and aromatherapy to relief workers during emergency work and afterwards. They have teamed up with Emergency Response Massage International to bring aromatherapy treatments along with massage to the disaster field in service to the responding heroes.

According to the UAE, they have immediate critical needs in response to Hurricane Season: any ready to use products including: gallons of bug spray, empty sprayers, inhalers of all types (uplifting, allergies, sinus, stress, sleep, etc.), aromatherapy sprays or roll-ons, balms, lotions, shampoos and monetary gifts.

According to UAE, no amount of monetary support is too little or too much and every product will be put to good use.

Is the Candle All Natural?

One of the questions we are often asked here is why we don't add coloring to our Body Massage Candles? Although there are many manufacuters of massage candles and candles in general that do use coloring, we like to let our consumers know that the product can not be considered "all natural" mainly because there are currently no natural candle dyes on the market, dyes are synthetic. Because of this fact, when purchasing a Lotion Candle, you should be leary of any company manufacturing them with candle dye and claiming they are "all natural." Although the dye may be skin safe, it's still not natural and if you suffer from skin sensitivity issues (like myself) you may have an adverse reaction.

Recently, we signed The Natural Ingredient Resource Center "Truth in Labeling" Pledge for our Scandle Essentials Line voluntarily pledging to follow the NIRC Criteria for labeling natural ingredients and products. NIRC guidelines are that in order for products to be labeled as "Natural," 95% of the ingredients must fit the NIRC criteria for natural ingredients. The remaining 5% may come from ingredients that do not meet the NIRC Criteria for natural, and which DO NOT artificial colors or ingredients from petrochemicals.
